Makeup by Mario Eyeshadow PaletteI’ve been trying out more cool toned makeup recently and was curious about the Makeup by Mario Master Mattes Eyeshadow Palette: The Neutrals because it’s mostly shades that skew more cool than warm. Makeup by Mario is a brand founded by celebrity makeup artist Mario Dedivanovic and offers a wide range of products that have a makeup artist quality to them but are still suitable for everyday. I have tried a handful of products from Makeup by Mario and so far have enjoyed everything I’ve tried. However, this palette was a bit of a disappointment for me and I’ll explain why in this post.

It’s rare that I love everything from a makeup brand so I can still be a fan of a makeup brand even if I try products that I don’t enjoy. I really wanted to try the Makeup by Mario Ethereal Eyes palette which was more cool toned but it was limited edition and no longer available. I don’t have a ton of matte eyeshadows in my collection but from time to time I do enjoy a palette without any shimmer. So I had hoped this would work for me but ultimately I was not a fan. Here is a bit more about the Makeup by Mario Master Mattes Eyeshadow Palette and my thoughts on how it performed for me.

Makeup by Mario Eyeshadow Palette Review

Makeup by Mario Eyeshadow Palette reviewCurrently Makeup by Mario has a few eyeshadow palettes to choose from. Here’s a look at all available palettes and a bit more about them.

Makeup by Mario Master Mattes Eyeshadow Palette: The Neutrals

This is the palette I am reviewing today. It’s a matte finish neutral-toned palette with 12 wearable shades. It’s a mix of cool and warm tone shades that are designed to create timeless looks for day or night.

Makeup by Mario Master Matte Eyeshadow Palette

This matte eyeshadow palette launched first and contains 12 shades in varying neutral colors.  Most of the shades are very warm and there is a good mix of lighter shades, medium shades and dark shades to create a ton of looks.

Makeup by Mario Master Metallic Eyeshadow Palette

The final palette in the Makeup by Mario line is this metallic palette which contains 12 vibrant shades. There are some neutral shades but this is definitely a bit more colorful for simple everyday looks.

Since I have so many warm toned eyeshadow palettes, I wanted to add a palette with more cool tones to my collection. While some of the colors are definitely cooler, the majority of the shades still felt quite warm to me. They do blend easily but there is a bit of fallout when applying. This didn’t deter me because many matte formulas can perform this way. However I tried a few different combinations on the eyes and never really loved any of them. They felt too similar to palettes I already had.

The swatches below appear quite patchy which they are but when used with a makeup brush on the lids, they are smooth and opaque so don’t let the swatches turn you off from this palette. It only matters how it wears on the lids which was really beautiful. But I didn’t feel I would reach for this palette enough and never loved the eye looks I achieved with it so it is not a hit for me.

Makeup by Mario Master Mattes Eyeshadow Swatches

Makeup by Mario Master Mattes Eyeshadow SwatchesThe swatches are quite patchy and to be honest, it took a few tries to get an opaque swatch but often swatches on the arm are not indicative of the performance of the palette. Though the swatches were not that great, the shadows applied very evenly on the lid and using a brush to pick up the color was key for ensuring the product performed nicely. This is not a palette I would recommend using with your fingers, it most definitely needs to be applied with makeup brushes.  Here is a breakdown of all the colors in the palette with a short description of each shade:

  • MN1 (cream)
  • MN2 (peach nude)
  • MN3 (cool sand)
  • MN4 (muted beige)
  • MN5 (light taupe)
  • MN6 (midtone tan)
  • MN7 (pale mauve)
  • MN8 (ochre brown)
  • MN9 (brownish gray)
  • MN10 (intense cool brown)
  • MN11 (cool blue gray)
  • MN12 (intense black)

The palette has a ton of great qualities and performs really well but my issue with it was more personally tied it not matching what I was looking for (if that makes sense). I will say that the matte finish was nice on the lids but I do tend to prefer a shimmer finish or even a slight satin finish. The matte texture was a tad too powdery and flat for me.

Longevity

These shadows are definitely very long wearing and lasted all day on me with little to no creasing. This is definitely a palette to wear for a night out or when you plan to have your makeup on for a long time.

Price Point

It’s definitely a mid range price point at $50 for 12 shades. To be honest, if you are going to spend that amount of money on an eyeshadow palette, my pick is the Natasha Denona I Need A Nude Palette or the Natasha Denona Glam Palette.

Blendability

These shadows are incredibly smooth and VERY easy to blend. However you need to use a brush with them rather than your fingers. If you try to apply these with your fingers, you will not get a smooth and even finish.

Pigment

Despite the swatches looking very patchy and not that pigmented, the palette is actually very richly pigmented. I would use a light hand when first applying and build up as needed. There is some fallout so be prepared especially when you are using the darker colors.

Cruelty Free

This product is cruelty free and gluten free.
