As someone who has always had a strong love of fashion, keeping up with trends feels second nature to me. When I was a teenager, I would rip out pages from Vogue and W each season and plaster my cork board with all the runway trends seen during fashion week. I didn’t necessarily wear them all but I loved knowing what they were and would work some into my outfits in a way that felt authentic to me. Though my style has remained pretty classic over the years, I still like to be aware of what the trends are so I can once again interpret them in a way that feels comfortable to me. Being aware of the trends does allow me to keep my wardrobe modern and looking put together in the best way. Trends don’t have to dictate how you shop but can help guide you towards pieces that will look updated and fresh. I’ve pulled together some of the most prominent fall fashion trends happening right now along with pieces that you can add to your closet to stay current.

What Are the Fall Fashion Trends
Capes and Ponchos

Outfit details: Wrap (similar) | Tee | Jeans | Shoes | Bag (similar) | Sunglasses
There is something so chic about a cape or poncho styled with a fall outfit. This year some brands are adding cape details to trench coats and barn jackets which is so unique! A classic cape or poncho is always timeless but adding a cape detail onto a regular piece of outerwear is really a new way to experiment with this trend.
Suede Blazers
Suede is a fabric that always makes an appearance every fall and winter but this particular year suede blazers are everywhere. Blazers are always a closet staple and a suede (or faux suede) version is perfect for the cooler weather. Some styles are more structured while others are a shacket style but they are a great investment piece that you will wear year after year.
Leopard Print

Leopard print goes in and out from year to year but for the most part, it always comes back. I have quite a few leopard print pieces in my closet that I pull out during fall and winter regardless if it’s trending or not. It’s a classic print that can be worn in a ton of different ways. Most of my leopard print is in the form of accessories but I do have a few clothing items that I still love to wear. Leopard print is everywhere this season in all different forms – accessories, clothing, home decor, etc. The key to buying leopard print pieces is to invest in a print that looks luxe. Great leopard print pieces are timeless.
Quilted Jackets

Outfit details: Jacket | Jeans | Bag | Sunglasses | Ballet Flats
There are so many different styles of lightweight jackets this fall. Quilted jackets are a tried and true staple – just look at the Barbour quilted jacket which has been around for decades. However, this year we are seeing quilted jackets with scalloped collars, patchwork prints and in various floral patterns.
Bucket Totes
Large bucket totes are pretty standard every fall but there are so many options to choose from this year. From simple styles to intricate details, there is something for everyone at every price point. Heavier outfits (sweaters, coats, scarves, boots, etc) work really well with large bag styles. The bulkier textures of fall clothing help to balance out the larger bag sizes perfectly.
Lug Sole Shoes/Boots

Outfit details: Coat | Sweater | Leggings | Boots | Sunglasses
Fall always means bad weather is soon to come but you don’t have to rely on traditional rain boots as your only foul weather footwear choice. Lug sole shoes and boots are everywhere this season and are perfect for wearing in the bad (and good) weather. Lug sole footwear is typically characterized by a thick chunky sole on any style of shoe. I’ve seen lug sole loafers, chelsea boots and even clogs!
Studded Accessories

This is one of my personal favorite trends for fall – studded accessories. I always love a studded piece worn with a fall outfit because it adds just enough edge and texture without overpowering the look. A simple cashmere sweater and jeans goes perfectly with a studded belt to create some contrast in an outfit. A long wool coatigan styled with a studded bag works because of the juxtaposition of the soft fuzzy fabric with the hard metal studs.
Barn Jackets

Outfit details: Jacket | Jeans | Sweater (discount code: MAREE10) | Belt | Bag | Shoes | Sunglasses | Necklace
If there is one jacket to buy this fall season, it is definitely a barn jacket. They are EVERYWHERE and there are so many different price points, colorways and styles to choose from. Barn jackets are a style that have been around for yearssss and go by various names such as chore jacket, utility jacket, etc. I’m sure they are an actual style that people wear when working outside but of course the fashion industry has to revamp it a bit and make them stylish for those of us who don’t even have a backyard garden.
