The best and most colorful season of the year is finally here!! As a fall lover and someone who has a fall birthday (and an October birthday at that – double bonus), I live for this time of year. And I especially live for all the fall clothes. The accessories, the light layers, the accessories and of course the AUTUMN COLORS!! Fall tones are what I gravitate towards the most. While my closet is mostly neutrals, the colors I do own are fall specific. Richer shades and deeper tones that add some excitement and interest to my wardrobe.
Fall is the season where you can experiment more with color but in a neutral way, does that make sense? Fall tones work so well with neutrals so you don’t have to worry about how you will style these colors in your wardrobe. In today’s post, I am going to share the best colors to wear for fall which also happen to be the ones I wear the most!
What Colors To Wear in The Fall

I was going to list green as one of the best fall colors to wear but honestly there are SO many different shades of green to choose from. I love them all. Hunter green, moss green, olive green, emerald green, forest green – it doesn’t matter the shade of green, I want to wear all of them. But to help narrow down a specific shade to add to your closet, I chose forest green. It’s rich but not as vibrant as emerald. Neutral but not as brown as hunter, moss or olive green. It really represents fall in the best way because the entire landscape of fall is rich with forest green tones.
I love wearing forest green with warm neutrals (ones with a yellow orange undertone) or paired with bright vibrant shades like fuschia and royal blue. Also don’t be afraid to mix your green tones in one outfit like I did in the first photo with my forest green puffer and olive green ballet flats. The outfit possibilities are endless with forest green!

As someone who wears a lot of red, burgundy tones in fall are a must have for my wardrobe. I even change up my makeup in the fall bringing out all my favorite berry lip colors. If wearing color feels out of your comfort zone, burgundy is one of the simplest shades to work into any wardrobe because it looks great with nearly anything. And if wearing a burgundy clothing item feels too much, opt for a burgundy accessory. I often find that a rich burgundy tote (much like the one I am wearing in the above photo) adds just enough color without feeling too bold. Burgundy is also great to buy because you can easily wear it into the holiday season for all the festivities.

Brown in autumn outfits is nothing groundbreaking but a rich chocolate brown really embraces the shades of the season. There is something about chocolate brown that looks so rich and luxe no matter the price point of the piece. Chocolate brown works seamlessly with a heavy neutral colors’ wardrobe. And I LOVE mixing brown tones in one look. I also think chocolate brown can easily be styled with cooler colors or with warmer tones like orange or mustard yellow. You may not want to wear a full chocolate brown outfit, but a rich chocolate brown suede bag is a fall must have!

How To Choose Color Combinations for Fall
Analyze Your Current Closet
Take inventory of what you currently own and the colors you already wear. Do you have a lot of pink and red in your closet? Burgundy could be a great choice for you. Is your denim mostly dark wash? If so, you may actually love rich blues for fall. Most of us have a ton of neutrals in our closet, but it’s important to notice are your neutral clothes warmer toned or cooler toned? Warmer neutrals skew more yellow orange, where as cooler neutrals skew more gray/blue. If you have more cooler tones in your closet, try rich jewel tones (emerald green, royal blue, plum purple) for fall. If your closet has warmer neutrals, embrace the mustard yellow, burnt orange/orange red and hunter green colors.
Start With Accessories
It’s always safest to introduce color into your closet with accessories first. A bag or shoes in a color you are wanting to wear is a great first step.
Utilize Pinterest
Believe it or not, I still use Pinterest to help me with shopping, outfit selections and combining colors. Seeing things laid out on a virtual Pinterest board helps me combine colors easily. When I pin two pieces next to each other, I can see if I like the colors together. This can really help when creating fall color palettes for yourself.
What Are the Best Color Combinations for Fall
Chocolate Brown and Orange
If you are wanting to step out of neutral colors just slightly, pairing chocolate brown with burnt orange is absolutely stunning. The richness of the brown balances the vibrancy of the burnt orange perfectly.
Olive Green and Chartreuse
This is a bit of wild card combination but olive green and chartreuse are incredibly popular right now. Both shades of green but almost at opposing ends which seems to make them work perfectly together! If you want an unexpected combination of fall colors, try these two shades.
Camel Brown and Burgundy
Burgundy looks great with so many warm colors but this is a combination I always go back to. Camel accessories can bring warmth to a burgundy look in the best way.
Forest Green and Chocolate Brown
Tries and true colors that will always look great together. Both are rich colors in tone but still neutral.
