There are so many denim styles to choose from that it can be incredibly confusing if you are trying to decide which style will work best for you. From bootcut to kick flare, baggy to barrel, the options seem endless. But when it comes to choosing a denim style that will instantly elevate your wardrobe, look modern, chic and yet still be timeless for years to come, there are only two styles that I would recommend. Wide leg and straight leg are the best options to add to your closet. They are the most versatile, the most classic and can be styled with anything you already own in your closet. 85% of my closet is a mix between both of these styles in different washes. This helps make shopping easier when I am looking for a new pair of jeans because it helps narrow down the options.
There is nothing wrong with other fits and shapes as they offer a variety of options for different style preferences. But I do think that everyone should own at least one pair of wide leg denim and straight leg denim as part of your core wardrobe.

I personally love a wide leg denim because they can elongate the leg and be so comfortable to wear. I have found that the style can be timeless and can look both polished and refined. Whether you choose a super voluminous pair of wide leg jeans or a slightly less wide leg fit, they are a style that can look good on all body types and can be worn a variety of ways. Wide leg jeans have the same type of fit as a pair of wide leg trousers. This makes them the perfect item to style with classic pieces, making them a great versatile piece to own. But if you want to create a more trendy look, they are still easy to pair with fashion-forward looks.

If wide leg jeans feel like too much of a step outside your comfort zone and skinny jeans are your preferred fit, a pair of straight leg jeans is the best option to update your look. A straight leg denim has a similar slim fit like skinny jeans but doesn’t fit too tight around the ankle. It’s a straight line from the waist to the ankle. Leaving a bit of room at the ankle also allows for a better shoe or boot option during the fall and winter. Choosing a wash (dark, black, medium, etc) and a rise (hi-rise, mid-rise, etc) is entirely dependent on your preference and body type. So go for something that fits your style. Each brand has a different version of a straight leg jean. So there will be slight variations but the overall silhouette is slim and straight.
