My hair has really been through quite a transformation entering into my 40’s. I have always had fine hair but it has really gotten finer and more prone to breakage as I have entered my mid-40’s. I began noticing lots of thinning around my hair line too so I began working on trying to stimulate hair growth and have an entire blog post dedicated to all the products that have helped grow my hair over the past year. But now more than ever, my fine hair needs additional moisture because my ends are dry and dull but everything seems to weigh my hair down.
Hair oils especially have been difficult for me to use because all of them feel so thick or too oily and end up leaving my ends piecey and greasy looking. Because of this I have been on the hunt for styling products, specifically hair oils, that can help nourish my hair and give it back some shine without immediately weighing it down. I went through quite a few but have finally found three formulations that I absolutely LOVE and can use regularly. All of these are also great for thicker hair types, but finding hair oils that work for fine hair is not easy so these definitely have my stamp of approval!
Best Hair Oils for Fine Hair
Anablue Hair Serum (discount code: MAREE15)
This was one of the first hair oils that I have used in a long time that immediately worked for my fine hair. In fact, out of all three of these, this Hair Serum is the most lightweight. It’s a thin watery texture that feels weightless and absorbs instantly. I use the entire Anablue line and have repurchased each product multiple times because I didn’t want to be without them. This has a gorgeous delicate rose scent that isn’t too powdery and leaves the hair smelling faintly of rose without being too strong.
It works well on damp hair but the true test for me is using it on dry hair which is what sold it for me. It helps give my hair a bit of shine, hydrate my ends and minimize any frizz. 80% of the formula is Argan Oil from Morocco which nourishes the hair as well as Vitamin E which enhances shine and provides antioxidant protection.
Amika Superfruit Star Lighweight Hair Styling Oil
I use a ton of Amika hair products so I had high hopes for this hair oil and it did not let me down. This is a mix between a heat protectant and a styling oil. I typically use it only as a styling oil and like how well it tames frizz and adds shine. It’s the thickest out of all three of these oils but still not too thick to weigh down my extremely fine hair. In addition to helping reduce frizz and protect the hair from heat damage, it reduces breakage and strengthens the hair.
This hair oil works well for all hair types but if you have fine hair, you only need the tiniest amount to see results. If you use too much, it can weigh the hair down so it’s best to start small and add more if you need. The smell is a bit stronger than the Anablue but still smells amazing! The scent is a mix of warm vanilla, spicy sweet clover and fresh citrus.

This hair oil is the newest addition to my collection but blew me away from the very first time I tried it! It’s a mix between the Anablue and Amika in terms of texture – a bit watery but not too lightweight. What I noticed first was the scent – it is strong so just know that. I am OBSESSED with the scent and would love to buy a body version of that scent if/when they finally make one! LOL There is an unscented version if you don’t want fragrance so don’t let that be a deterrent. The scent is a blend of vanilla, amber and bergamot and leaves your hair smelling incredible. Truly one of the best scented hair products I have ever tried. But the formulation is just as fantastic as the scent and has quickly become one of my go-to hair products in the heat.
It is a mix of pomegranate seed oil, argan oil, sweet almond oil, sunflower seed oil and aloe to help deeply nourish and hydrate the hair. It can be used on wet hair to help provide heat protection, on dry hair to add shine and nourish the ends or as a deep conditioning treatment by leaving on the hair 10 minutes before washing. I like to use it for styling purposes and love how much shine it gives my hair!
