Bits and Pieces: Over sized Plaid

Fashion is often defined by the ever present and overabundance of draped, over sized, blousey or slouchy pieces, which ultimately look good on the giraffe-like models who don them.  Long, lanky and lean - these types of silhouettes wear super sized clothes to sheer perfection.  The challenge arises when I, of average height (5'4") and build (referring to my body type as a "build" sounds so unappealing but let's just go with it and chalk it up to writer's liberties), try to duplicate the aforementioned style head to toe in everyday life.  What inevitably ensues is a nothing short of schlumpadinka, and yes I believe that is the technical term.  However, I have found that the trick to wearing slightly over sized clothes or clothes that are meant to drape is often how you style it - case in point - the two stylings of my favorite plaid coat - AKA the horse blanket.  For the first look - I find that adding a belt when the jacket is buttoned helps to define the waist and give me some semblance of a shape.  On the contrary to this, when I leave the jacket open, and allow it to just drape, I pair it with a fitted sweater dress to create some balance.  And then of course finishing it off with elbow length gloves helps to just fill a void - a void of fabric from my elbows to my wrists that the designers of the coat inconveniently forgot to add in the name of fash-shun.   What do you think of over sized pieces? Do you dabble in the style or stick to fitted silhouettes that buck the potato sack trend all together?
